Contrary to popular belief, electric ranges are generally faster than gas when it comes to boiling water. The best also simmer steadily, bake evenly, and on the whole broil better than their gas counterparts.

“Even though most people really like to cook on gas ranges, radiant electric smoothtops have a lot to offer,” says Tara Casaregola, who oversees all range testing for Consumer Reports.

Getting a great electric range won’t cost you a fortune, either. Some smoothtops that earn a rating of Very Good can be had for around $500. Investing even a couple of hundred dollars more can get you substantial perks, such as stainless steel, warming zones, and, in some cases, even convection. And while you won’t see many induction ranges for under $1,000, some don’t cost much more and are worth a look.

    More on Ranges

In CR’s labs, we conduct a battery of performance tests, determining how quickly various ranges boil water, bake cookies evenly, and hold a stovetop simmer. Our engineers measure the usable capacity of every oven, assess self-clean features, and evaluate the ease of using the controls. Data for brand reliability and owner satisfaction, from our exclusive member surveys, also factor into a model’s Overall Score.
