Auto showing in the Windy City

Consumer Reports News: February 07, 2007 05:24 PM

We arrived in Chicago to attend the 2007 auto show a few hours later than anticipated. It was not surprising, with the Midwest deep freeze made a bit more exciting with snow. Facing bitter cold, I am more likely to be singing the first lines from Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" than the classic Mike Quincy cited in a previous post. "We come from the land of the ice and snow/From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow."

The chilly reception isn't dampening the mood here. For example, as an ice breaker, Toyota Senior Vice President Don Esmond kicked off the first show press conference with: "It is so cold, I saw a couple lawyers in the back of the room with their hands in their own pockets." (Yes, insert groan.)

The product unveiled was no joke, the all-new Toyota Highlander. Derived from the current Camry platform, the 2008 Highlander has more power, space, and innovation than the well-regarded model it replaces. The show is off to a good start…

Our live coverage is now underway, with a variety of new and updated models to be shared through the week, including a more detailed look at the Highlander.
