If you own a Digital Security Controls FSA or FSB series photoelectric smoke alarm (shown), the following recall could affect you.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on March 22, 2007, announced a recall of about 32,000 Digital Security Controls smoke alarms because the detectors could fail to detect smoke during a fire. As of the recall date, the manufacturer had received no reports of incidents or injuries.
The alarms ($60 to $70) were sold by commercial and residential installers nationwide from October through December 2006. The dome-shaped units have a metal mesh covering around the smoke sensor and are hardwired to your electrical system (they do not use a battery).
You should contact your installer to arrange a free inspection to determine if your unit is subject to the recall. If it is, you'll receive a free replacement alarm and installation. You can also call the manufacturer for details on how to receive a free replacement. The company recommends that only a professional installer should remove and replace defective units.
For more information and to determine if your unit is affected by the recall, call 877-666-1250 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday) or go to www.dsc.com.
Essential information: Consumer Reports recommends that you install dual-sensor smoke alarms throughout your home, which combine photoelectric and ionization sensors in one unit. Watch our exclusive interactive to see where to install alarms in your house.
