Auto shows--not just for car geeks

Consumer Reports News: April 09, 2007 09:12 PM

In the market for a new car, or just curious about the latest vehicles? Want to research your options, but don't want to drive from dealership to dealership? There is place where you can see hundreds of shiny new vehicles all in one location--an auto show.

Many people think that auto shows are only for car enthusiasts and dealers, but these events are a great way for all consumers to see every major manufacturer's vehicle lineup without sales pressure. Each company has an area on the show floor where all of their cars are displayed. You can sit in them, touch them, and check out their features and options.  Best of all, you can ask product specialists questions without obligation and there are no sales people breathing down your neck.

With so many vehicles on display, you may even discover models that weren't on your radar. And you will be able to quickly compare how vehicles suit your needs. While typically there are no test drives, the show can help narrow down your choices in a very time-efficient way, leaving you to go to your local dealerships to evaluate just a few cars from behind the wheel.

In addition to car shopping, it can be fun to see exotic cars like those ultra-luxury machines from Bentley, Ferrari, and Lamborghini. These new-car events often have special exhibits to spice up the show, such as a muscle car collection or vintage car corral.

Tip: If you decide to attend any auto show, don't forget to wear comfortable shoes. All those cars mean lots of walking. Expect to a clock a few miles around the show floor. Seriously.

While the national media focuses on the largest events (Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, and New York), there are numerous regional shows that can prove as useful. Watch your local paper for announcements for events in your area.

The New York Auto Show is currently going on at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City from Friday, April 6th to the Sunday, April 15th. Go to  autoshowny.com for more information on tickets and hours.  Also, check out Consumer Reports' coverage of the NY event including all the 2008 models and concept cars that were unveiled.

    Happy shopping!
