    Bold car-naming moves

Consumer Reports News: April 04, 2007 12:19 PM

In a reversal of their recent car naming practice, Ford has announced that it will shed the familiar retro name applied to the Fairlane concept vehicle for an all-new moniker when their new Flex crossover goes to production. This now-familiar strategy has seen the Lincoln Zephyr renamed MKZ and Mercury Montego branded Sable.

The good news for FoMoCo marketers is that this switch leaves the door wide open for Ford to bring back the Fairlane in a year or so if sales tank--a trick they hope works magic for the 2008 Taurus and Taurus X, formerly known as the Five Hundred and Freestyle, respectively.
