Dig deeper, because it's all in the name

Consumer Reports News: January 13, 2008 02:56 PM

I read an Automotive News headlines the other day, and couldn't help but click on a link that I thought said "Rivera appears at Detroit auto show." This intrigued me because I was busy preparing my auto show coverage and I'm a Yankees fan. What does the Detroit and the New York Yankees have in common? Well, absolutely nothing, except that the Tigers now have to deal with Gary Sheffield, but that's a different story. But reading the headline, I thought the Yankee great All-Star reliever Mariano Rivera was going to be at the show. Wow…a future Hall of Famer; the last active player wearing uniform number 42 (since retired by all of baseball to honor Jackie Robinson); the closer for the Yankee championship teams of 1996, '98, '99, and 2000. Now, I'm not one to be an autograph hound, but I'd have to at least shake his hand. How great would it be, though, if I got my picture taken with him? My two sons – also Yankee fans– would likely crown me coolest dad in the world.

But clicking on the link made my shoulders slump and my head droop. Which Rivera is going to be in Detroit? Well, he doesn't play baseball, and it's not Geraldo (mustachioed TV personality) or Diego (Mexican artist whose fame was broadened by the movie Frida, staring Salma Hayek…plus he died in 1957, making his appearance highly unlikely). No, coming to Detroit – for the first time since 1999 – will be the Buick Riviera concept car. I, ridiculously, dropped the "i" in Riviera. Obviously, I love cars, but I was really hoping for Mariano…
