2009 CES: Convergence is the name of the game with in-car electronics

Consumer Reports News: January 07, 2009 04:32 PM

GPS navigators. Satellite and HD radio. Car audio and video systems. Portable music players. For in-car infotainment, the hardware is already here. The ongoing challenge is how to make it all work together in a way that enhances the driving experience without creating additional driver distractions.

This mobile electronics convergence, as the industry calls it, is already in motion. GPS navigators can receive real-time traffic information. Chrysler has introduced in-car wireless Internet connectivity for laptops and other consumer electronics. Through its OnStar system, GM can diagnose some vehicle problems remotely. And some HD radios let you tag songs you hear on the airwaves so you can download them from iTunes at a later point.

But there's a lot more to come.

When the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) opens tomorrow in Las Vegas, we'll get a front-line look at the latest innovative products, as well as the latest efforts in this convergence campaign. So, stay tuned as we explore the cutting edge of in-car electronics over the next several days and report the highlights to you as we see them.
