Crib netting tragedy: Bare cribs are safest

Consumer Reports News: January 22, 2009 06:08 AM

The strangulation death last month of a 2-year-old from Massachusetts, which was caused when he got tangled in netting that was placed over the top of a portable crib while traveling with his parents in Maine, is a tragic reminder that the safest crib is a bare one.

Netting or other crib "tents" should not be used, nor should items such as sleep positioners, bumpers, blankets, pillows, or any other loose or soft bedding be in the crib. (See our tips for safer sleeping for babies.)

Any child who tries to get out of a crib is better off out of a crib and in a toddler bed. Another option is to put a mattress on the floor if you are worried about him or her falling out of a toddler bed. Never put your baby to bed on an air mattress, which can pose a suffocation risk.

For more about this suffocation death and a recent crib recall, see our Safety blog. And see our crib Ratings report and play yards Ratings report for recommended models and safety advice.
