Two men have been sentenced to death in Chinese courts in connection with the recent melamine in milk scandal that sickened 300,000 children and contributed to the deaths of at least six, according to a report in The New York Times.
In addition, the newspaper reports, three other defendants, including a top dairy company executive, have been sentenced to life in prison, another defendant received a suspended death sentence, and 15 others were given jail terms ranging from two to 15 years.
As we wrote during our earlier coverage of this food safety issue, the problems occurred when dairy product producers added the chemical melamine to artificially boost the appearance of protein. Children who drank the tainted milk and infant formula developed kidney stones and other health issues.
The sentencings in the Intermediate People's Court in Shijiazhuang are causing a stir here and abroad. Last week, Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, urged the Food and Drug Administration "to move quickly to expand testing of infant formula for melamine and related compounds, and to recall all contaminated products." CU remains concerned about possible melamine use in protein fortified foods and dietary supplements. The overburdened and secretive FDA has yet to report on any testing they've done on these products.
