The calendar says spring has just arrived, though the snow that greeted those of us in the New York City area the morning of March 20 was an odd way to signal the seasonal turnover. But it's already been summer for weeks in our Yonkers, New York, test labs. We've been firing up a new batch of gas grills for our June issue (available online and on newsstands in late April; watch the video buying guide, right) and cranking up the latest air conditioners for the July issue (available online and on newsstands in late May). Our in-depth testing and buying advice will help keep you well fed and cool all summer long.
The grills report will feature details on more than three dozen gas models as well as well as an outdoor cooker that runs on wood pellets. (If you enjoy real barbecuing, you'll want to take a look at this model.) Our review of air conditioners will cover window units and—as so many of you have requested—portable air conditioners and even split-ductless systems. The story will also fill you in on the reliability of major brands of central air conditioning. You don't want to buy a repair-prone brand, do you?
Stay tuned for more information on these reports as testing progresses.—Celia Kuperszmid Lehrman
Essential information: Give your grill a checkup before you try our easy, delicious grilling recipes, including tips for making the perfect steak. And don't forget to get your air conditioner ready for the season. The warm weather will be here before you know it.
