JetBlue to the rescue

Consumer Reports News: March 16, 2009 05:22 PM

A few months ago we reported how automaker Hyundai was trying to boost sales in tough times by offering to buy back vehicles from customers who lost their jobs and couldn't afford to make their monthly finance payments.

Now JetBlue, a major player in the beleaguered airline industry, has launched a similar program for folks who've booked a trip but end up on the unemployment line.

The JetBlue Promise Program protects domestic travelers who book a flight between Feb. 17 and June 1. To qualify for a refund, customers must have lost a full-time job through no fault of their own, and ask for their money back in writing at least 14 days before the date of travel. The person who booked the flight and put it on his or her credit card can request a refund for up to nine other travelers listed on the reservation.

As you'd expect with an offer like this, carefully read the  fine print. For example, the program doesn't cover corporate or group travel bookings, Getaway vacation packages and cruises, and flights paid for with JetBlue gift cards or vouchers, TrueBlue Award Travel or travel certificates.

If you're a victim of the sour economy and think you're entitled to an airfare refund, download and print the Eligibility Letter and Terms, fill it out, sign the document, and have it notarized. Then fax the letter and terms to 801 365-2440, Attn: JetBlue Promise Program. You'll also have to send the original Eligibility Letter and Terms to the company via certified mail/return receipt requested, to JetBlue Airways, Attn: JetBlue Promise, P.O. Box 17435, Salt Lake City, Utah 84117

You'll get an e-mail confirmation to confirm receipt of your fax within 48 hours, and if all goes smoothly, your claim will be processed within 30 days. The refund will be credited to the card used to book the flight. Remember to keep a copy of all documents for your records.

The company says that even if JetBlue denies your request for a refund, the airline will still cancel your flight, minus a $100 penalty. Any leftover money can be used toward another flight within the next 12 months. JetBlue's fares are usually nonrefundable
