Tip of the day: TV drug ads don't tell you everything

Consumer Reports News: March 18, 2009 11:14 AM

One-fifth of our recent drug survey respondents have asked their doctor for a drug they saw advertised on television or elsewhere. And their doctors complied with the request nearly 70 percent of the time. TV drug ads pitch the newest drugs, which are not only more expensive but also often work no better than older ones. And all too often, drug ads omit safety or side-effect information. See our Consumer Reports Health AdWatch series for examples of how some TV drug ads omit or minimize safety and side-effect information.
