Speed reached, in miles per hour, by competitors in the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association, whose 2009 season begins this weekend in Avon Park, Florida. There are several different classifications in the LMRA; the top speeds are reached in the factory-experimental division, whose mowers have undergone major modifications.
As fun as the racing looks, here's a case where you need to follow the "don't try this at home" warning. In fact, given the high number of emergency-room visits and deaths attributed to lawn-mower and tractor injuries each year, it's important that you follow these basic mowing-safety steps. Also be sure to wear hearing protection when you use your mower or tractor. In a survey of 1,000 Americans by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, only 16 percent of respondents don hearing protection when using a gas mower or leaf blower; 13 percent wear protection occasionally and 70 percent never do.
