Dorel recalls 76,600 Eddie Bauer play yards with 'rocking' bassinets

Consumer Reports News: May 13, 2009 02:28 PM

Dorel has recalled 76,600 Eddie Bauer-brand play yards with rocking bassinets because the rocking attachment can remain in a tilted position (in non-rocking mode) causing an infant to roll to the corner or side and become wedged or pressed against the corner, side or bottom. This presents a risk of suffocation or positional asphyxiation.

Dorel has received 10 reports of infants rolling to one side, including six who had their faces pressed against the side or the bottom of the bassinet. One child reportedly was turning purple and was out of breath when discovered. No injuries have been reported, according the the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

This recall affects Eddie Bauer Soothe & Sway portable play yards. The convertible play yard has a bassinet and changing station feature. A mobile with three teddy bears was sold with the play yard. Models included in the recall are 05046 (all units) and 05044 units manufactured before December 1, 2008. Model numbers and manufacture dates are printed on a sticker on one of the support legs underneath the play yard in the YY/MM/DD format. (The play yards sold in Canada have different model numbers.)

Made in China, the play yards were sold at Target, Sears and the Burlington Coat Factory stores in the U.S. and at various retailers in Canada as well as by Internet retailers from January 2008 through May 2009 for about $150.

Parents should stop using the bassinet attachment of the play yard and contact Dorel Juvenile Group for a $40 voucher toward the purchase of a new Dorel product. The CPSC says that the play yard itself can still be used. For more information, contact Dorel Juvenile Group at (888) 233-4903 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's Web site at www.djgusa.com.
