    Minnesota and Chicago ban BPA

Consumer Reports News: May 18, 2009 05:18 PM

The safety community has been abuzz with news about bans on BPA, or bisphenol-A, a chemical commonly used to harden plastics, among other things. Last week, Minnesota became the first state and Chicago the first city in the country to ban the sale of baby bottles and sippy cups manufactured with BPA. (Earlier this year, Suffolk County, in New York, passed a measure banning the sale of the chemical there.)

As we've written here before, BPA is commonly found in polycarbonate baby bottles and sport bottles as well as in the lining of canned foods. Studies suggest that the chemical can mimic estrogen and may be linked to cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, reproductive abnormalities, and other health problems in children and adults.

In March, the six largest manufacturers of baby bottles—Avent, Disney First Years, Gerber, Dr. Brown, Playtex and Evenflo—announced that they would no longer sell bottles made with BPA.

Consumers Union, which has repeatedly called on the FDA to ban BPA from food and beverage containers, lauds the recent measures but says federal action is needed.

Until that happens, learn how to reduce your family's exposure to BPA.
