Q&A: Grape juice or red wine?

Consumer Reports News: May 22, 2009 11:00 AM

Does grape juice have some of the same health benefits as red wine? —W.C.P., Knoxville, Tenn.

Probably, though red wine may offer extra protection. Both are high in flavonoids, plant compounds that may protect the heart by inhibiting blood clots and possibly increasing the level of HDL (good) cholesterol. But the alcohol in wine may provide an additional anticlotting benefit.

Of course, too much alcohol poses serious risks. And both beverages have lots of calories, about 190 per cup. So make sure that you drink them, especially alcohol, in moderation.
