Q&A: Hydrogen peroxide vs. soap and water for cuts

Consumer Reports News: June 05, 2009 10:28 AM

I often see hydrogen peroxide listed as an essential item for a first-aid kit. Is that better for cleaning cuts and scrapes than plain old soap and water? —R.B., Brooklyn, NY

Probably not. Many people use hydrogen peroxide on minor cuts, thinking it will help kill germs. Studies have failed to show any benefit, though the bubbling action can help remove debris from minor wounds. Soap and water might work just as well. Hydrogen peroxide does come in handy when clean water isn't available. So pack some in your travel first-aid kit.
