July 20: When asked whether they are satisfied with their family life, smokers are less likely than nonsmokers and quitters to say that they are "very satisfied." Smokers' satisfaction level with their job is also lower than that of nonsmokers, and their satisfaction with their standard of living is lower than that of both quitters and nonsmokers. Fewer than half of smokers (45 percent) say that their health is excellent or very good, compared with 63 percent of nonsmokers and 55 percent of former smokers.
July 16: Young adults are being hit quite hard by the current recession—over a third report having trouble paying rent—and many are facing the pain by cutting back on favorite pastimes of the bar-hopping youth: alcohol and cigarettes. Fully 39 percent of those ages 18 to 29 say they have cut back spending on alcohol or cigarettes as a result of the recession.
The Pew Research Center releases a "Daily Number" highlighting a findings from their many surveys. These two were four days apart, July 16 and July 20; perhaps a silver lining.
