Two more children die in recalled Simplicity bassinets

Consumer Reports News: August 21, 2009 12:58 PM

After the deaths of two more infants, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging all parents to stop using flawed 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible "close sleeper" bassinets made by Simplicity and also sold with the Graco logo and a Winnie the Pooh motif.

When the bassinet was first recalled a year ago, the CPSC knew of two deaths—a six-month-old  girl from Shawnee, Kansas and a four-month-old girl from Noel, Missouri. Since then the agency has learned of two more deaths including a two-month-old girl from Demorest, Georgia and a six-month-old girl from Forth Worth, Texas. There have also been two reports of infants becoming entrapped but freed without harm.

This recall has been confusing from the start. When the recall of 900,000 bassinets was first announced it was not disclosed that at least 200,000 also carried the Graco logo or a Winnie the Pooh motif. But the confusion didn't end there. There were two different models on the market—one with the design flaw and one without. The danger presented by the bassinet is that when used in its bedside co-sleeper mode, it's possible for an infant to slip through an opening between a cross-bar and the mattress, become entrapped and strangle or suffocate.

To make matters for parents worse, Simplicity went out of business leaving owners of the bassinet with little recourse. Fortunately, a group of retailers agreed to recall the bassinets and to provide refunds or store credits to consumers who returned them to the place of purchase. The group of retailers includes Toys 'R' Us, Walmart, Kmart, Target, J.C. Penney, Big Lots, Burlington Coat Factory, Kohl's, Amazon.com and some regional retailers. (See the recall notice for the full list of retailers and model numbers.)

The CPSC is asking consumers to help spread the word about this hazardous product and to share the safety warning with family, friends, day care centers and consignment shops. Earlier this month, the CPSC included the bassinet on its list of 10 things not to buy at a reseller.
