Chrysler Group LLC announced today the first Fiat engine to appear in the U.S. in almost 30 years will make its debut in the Fiat 500 mircrocar when it goes on sale here in 2010.
Already used on Fiat vehicles in Europe, Multiair technology uses a variable valve system that the carmaker says can improve power by 10 percent while reducing exhaust emissions by 10 percent.
Two Multiair engines are planned for the 500 in the U.S., a 1.4-liter, 100 hp four-cylinder and a turbocharged version to follow later, probably in a sporty Abarth version.
Chrysler plans to use Multiair technology in several upcoming new engine designs, including another four-cylinder and an upcoming V6. The carmaker says the technology can also be used with diesel engines.
