LCD TV prices down 22 percent on average during Black Friday

Consumer Reports News: December 02, 2009 03:18 PM

Did you buy an LCD TV this Black Friday weekend? If so, you probably got a good deal. Market research firm iSuppli says shoppers paid on average about 22 percent less than they would have just a week earlier.

But that was just the average price drop. The price of 26-inch LCD TVs fell from $384 before Black Friday to $250, an almost 35% drop,  while the average price of 32-inch sets declined 25% to $369.

Those looking for a bigger-screen set didn't fare as well, as the average price of 46-inch sets fell only 7 percent, to $964, from their pre-Friday price, and 42-inch models were down by 7.3 percent, to an average of $700.

While we expect prices to rise again over the next few weeks, we're still optimistic that some great deals, especially on larger sets, await those shopping closer to Christmas, and even after the New Year. Check out our recent blog post on why we think so. —James K. Willcox
