Q&A: Is it worth buying replacement batteries for my cordless drill?

Consumer Reports News: December 18, 2009 02:41 PM

I 've read that replacement batteries for cordless drills don't hold a charge as well as the original equipment. Is that true?

Based on years of cordless-drill testing, during which we've had to replace many batteries due to the grueling nature of our tests, we've seen that replacement batteries from the manufacturer of your drill can hold a charge and work just as well as the originals.

But you might consider replacing the entire tool, according to Peter Sawchuk, the project leader on drill testing for Consumer Reports. Several worthwhile models in our ratings could cost you less than or about the same price as two replacement batteries, which start at $25 each for nickel-cadmium batteries and run to $100+ each for lithium-ion models. (Ratings of cordless drills and cordless tool kits are available to subscribers.)

Plus, you'll get a brand-new drill with the latest features. (For details on recycling batteries, go to the Call2Recycle Web site or call 877-2-RECYCLE.)

Sawchuk advises that you check the price of replacement batteries before you decide to get a new drill. For some brands, including Ryobi and Ryobi-made Craftsman cordless tools, replacement batteries are reasonably enough priced to make replacement a viable option.

If you do buy a new drill, look for a tool whose batteries can be used with other cordless tools from the manufacturer.
