2010 International Builders' Show: Day 1 updates

Consumer Reports News: January 19, 2010 01:22 PM

The Consumer Reports Home team is in Las Vegas this week at the 2010 International Builders' Show, covering the event via our Twitter page, blog posts, and videos. Here are some day-one updates.

    • We expected that attendance at this year's Builders' Show would drop from years past. Senior Editor Daniel DiClerico notes that the south hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center seems far less crowded than past editions.

    • The Builders' Show is always a great venue to learn about the latest home technology, including smart meters and smart appliances. Whirlpool says smart appliances don't need smart meters; all you need is a Web hookup, reports DiClerico, who adds that Whirlpool plans to launch a pilot program with smart appliances in 40 Houston homes this summer, with full production slated for 2012.
