By the Numbers: NYC area "jets" to energy-use record

Consumer Reports News: January 08, 2010 07:28 PM

    967,908

Number of dekatherms of natural gas delivered  this past Sunday by Con Edison, a major utility company that provides natural gas and electricity to customers in New York City and Westchester County. It was an all-time record for a winter day, according to this article in the Daily News. Con Edison also reported a record hourly amount of electricity delivered, sending out 7,951 megawatts of juice at 7 p.m.

A Con Ed spokesperson says the bitter cold weather combined with New Yorkers staying at home to watch NBC's coverage of the Cincinnati Bengals-New York Jets game that evening boosted energy use.

Moving from the gridiron to the energy grid and from zone defenses to zone heating, utilities are stepping up efforts to get you to cut energy use. National Grid, for instance, now sends thousands of its Massachusetts customers monthly bills with data showing how their gas and electricity consumption compares to that of similar households in their area.

You can't control the weather but you can take some steps to cut down on your energy use and save some money. Read "Weekend Project: Keep Your Heating Costs Down This Winter" for the details.
