Preparing for an emergency starts at home

Consumer Reports News: January 21, 2010 05:25 PM

Growing up, one of my mother's favorite 'isms was "prepare for war in time of peace." It's a strong statement that I didn't fully understand until I experienced disaster for my self. We were driving through Hurricane Andrew, and made it safely through with the help of flashlights, blankets, and a cooler stocked with water and sandwiches.

The earthquake in Haiti and the desperate situation there now reminds us that while natural disasters cannot be prevented, there are ways we can be prepared, so says Jamie Lee Curtis' recent Huffington Post blog on this topic.

A disaster will/could strike you and your family in your own communities. We watched Katrina. We watched how quickly anarchy and self preservation turned stunned and hungry, angry, hurting masses into mobs desperate for water, food, shelter, HELP. Trying to get aid for a sick or injured child. Are we prepared? Doubtful.

Keep yourself and those closest to you safe in an urgent situation—whether an earthquake, hurricane, or wave of swine flu—by having an emergency kit with food, water, and first aid on hand. It's a small, but important step you can take to keep yourself and your family.
