Video: Toyota accelerator recall - latest news and advice

Consumer Reports News: February 02, 2010 08:42 PM

Toyota is rushing to address the sticking accelerator recall that has halted sales and idled factory lines, and the automaker now has steel reinforcement bars being shipped to dealers and revised pedal assemblies are heading to dealerships. The first pieces are expected to arrive late in the week. (Read: " Toyota announces fix for sticking accelerator recall is en route to dealers now.")

For owners, this means that dealerships will soon be able to begin the long process of performing the work on 2.3 million cars. The correction will be added within the existing assembly to reduce friction. This fix can be applied to pedals whether they have symptoms or not, and Toyota claims it will not degrade over time.

There are still many questions being raised about this program, including by the media. We have compiled a series of clips from recent Consumer Reports interviews featuring yours truly, Deputy Editor Online Autos Jeff Bartlett, addressing the recall itself and advice for both Toyota owners and car shoppers. (See our previous highlights video featuring Autos Editor Rik Paul.)
You can also listen to Auto Specialist Mike Quincy on NPR, and see Senior Director David Champion on the CBS Early Show.

We will continue to cover this developing story. Be sure to follow Consumer Reports Cars blog ( RSS) and Twitter ( @CRcars) to keep up with the latest information and advice, also see our unintended acceleration guide.
