A capital joke: Google renamed 'Topeka' for April Fool's Day

Consumer Reports News: April 01, 2010 02:33 PM

The Google Web site on April Fool's Day.

Turnabout is fair play. Log onto Google's home page today and you'll see it's been rechristened "Topeka" for the day—April Fool's Day, of course. Eric Schmidt, chairman and CEO of the search engine giant, plays out the joke on the company's official Web site, where his blog calls it "one of the most important transitions in our company's history."

It's a friendly tweak to the capital of Kansas, which renamed itself Google for the month of March, in a bid to be one of the test sites for Google's ultra-high speed broadband service.

It remains to be seen whether the Kansas city's ploy works. Google hasn't yet announced where it will test the new service.
