Cash for Appliances News: Changing start dates and other rebate-program updates

Consumer Reports News: April 02, 2010 01:19 PM

Stay on top of cash for appliances news.
As the $300 million cash for appliances rebate program continues, we've seen states adopting different ways for residents to get rebates as well as changes to start dates.

Florida is requiring an online reservation for the 20 percent first-come, first-served rebates available on the purchase of a qualifying appliance. The program runs April 16-25. As reported in the St. Petersburg Times, state officials have cited the cost of maintaining a phone hotline and the high volume of inquiries expected for the decision, but some advocates are criticizing the policy as unfair to people who might not have access to the Internet. Florida residents can still apply for a rebate by mailing in a printable forum, but approval will come only if the $17.58 million available is not exhausted by online applications.

Ohio, which launched its cash for appliances program on March 26, is allowing reservations to be made by phone or online. According to this report in The Oxford Press, almost 21,000 rebates have been reserved for dishwashers, exhausting available funds for that category.

Texas residents can also reserve rebates by phone or online, starting on April 7. Kitchen and laundry appliances must be purchased April 16-25, while central air conditioners, water heaters, and air-source heat pumps can be bought for 60 days after the start of the rebate program.
