End of the trail: GM to close Hummer

After being unable to find a suitable buyer, General Motors will wind down Hummer, according to Automotive News and Bloomberg. The news is not unexpected, as GM announced in February that it was not completing a deal begun with front-runner Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd. of China. GM held out for a last-minute buyer, before making the announcement today to dealers.

Hummer joins Saturn in being a once-promising brand that has become a carpocalypse casualty. In total, GM has reduced its portfolio to four brands (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC), shutting down Hummer, Pontiac, and Saturn, and selling Saab.
