You've previously warned that pomegranate juice could interfere with certain prescription drugs. Which ones could cause problems? —R.M.H., Durham, N.C.
Several. Pomegranate juice is loaded with disease-fighting antioxidants and may help reduce blood pressure and other heart-risk factors. But because it's thought to lower blood pressure in a manner similar to prescription ACE inhibitors—such as benazepril (Lotensin), enalapril (Vasotec), and lisinopril (Prinivil), all available generically—combining the two could create an additive effect that theoretically might drive blood pressure too low.
Pomegranate juice also appears to inhibit at least two liver enzymes that help metabolize some other medications, including several antidepressants, AIDS drugs, and certain narcotic pain relievers. That could potentially cause unhealthy levels of those drugs to build up in the blood. Other, less common drugs might also interact, so talk to your doctor or pharmacist before regularly drinking pomegranate juice if you take prescription drugs.
