The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has added portable drop-side cribs to its original February 9, 2010 recall of Generation 2 Worldwide and Childesigns full-size drop-side cribs. The agency says there is no safe fix, and parents and caregivers should stop using the cribs immediately.
The Generation 2 crib's plastic hardware can break, and the drop side can detach from the side of the crib, opening a gap in which a baby can become trapped and strangle or suffocate. In addition, the mattress support can detach and create a space between the crib frame and the sagging mattress.
The CPSC has received reports dating back to 2002 of three infants who suffocated when the drop side detached and they were trapped, and reports of 20 other drop-side incidents, leading to children falling out of the crib, a broken arm, and bruising. It also has eight reports of mattresses detaching.
