What's New in Consumer Reports: Kitchen products from the May 2010 issue

Our annual special section on kitchen appliances and kitchen remodeling appears in the August issue of Consumer Reports, but you don't have to wait until them for new-appliance coverage. The May 2010 issue includes one of our largest tests of refrigerators (116 models rated) and reviews of juice makers and water filters.

Efficient refrigerators and rebates might entice you. Manufacturers have boosted the energy efficiency of many of the models in our latest report on refrigerators, many of which qualify for a cash for appliances rebate. Plus, we continue to find energy-use discrepancies in some tested models—they use much more electricity than their manufacturers state.

Several water filters impress. Our latest review of water filters found several countertop, faucet-mount, undersink, and reverse-osmosis models that provide good filtration and flow rates, saving you money on bottled water. Find out what's in your water and watch our water filters buyer's guide.

Juice makers that perform well and are versatile. The highly rated Juiceman Pro JM503, $180, juicer was a standout performer in our new review of juice makers, but the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth 67650(H) did nearly as well for $100 less. The report also includes a couple of juicers that stretch your budget by doubling as capable blenders and food processors.
