2.5 million Step2 riding toys recalled

Consumer Reports News: May 12, 2010 01:06 PM

A riding toy that has been on the market for 11 years was recalled today because the maker, Step2, has received 28 reports of the handle detaching, all of which resulted in injuries. The recall covers 2.5 million Push Around and Whisper Ride "buggies."

Step2 has received 28 reports of the handle detaching; two incidents required professional medical treatment and 26 resulted in minor scrapes and scratches. Health Canada is also recalling the rider.

Made in the U.S., the riding toys were sold at major retailers and specialty stores from August 1999 through March 2010 for between $29 and $59. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is telling consumers to stop using the recalled buggy and contact Step2 for a free repair kit at (866) 860-1887 or visit the firm's webiste at www.step2.com.

Only buggies with pins that have yellow plastic knobs are included in the recall. Those with white or black nuts and bolts are not.
