Toy and food choking deaths are high in kids older than 3
Even though toys with small parts carry a warning that they are "not for children under 3," a recent study shows that the average age of children who die from choking incidents is 4.6 years. Small toys aren't the only choking concern. Food was the cause of 42 percent of incidents while non-food items caused of the rest. Lost lives are not the only cost associated with choking, according to the report. On average, children who were admitted to the hospital spent 6.4 days there and underwent two procedures to remove the object, at a cost of $34,652. Learn more in the full Safety blog post.
Camel nicotine "orbs" look like candy
Advertised in mainstream magazines, Camel nicotine pellets are promoted as an alternative to cigarettes to use in places where smoking is banned. The size of a Tic-Tac, the flavored pellets pack a nicotine punch that could be fatal to children, according to a report published today in the journal Pediatrics. Ingestion of tobacco products by infants and children is a major reason for calls to poison control centers nationwide, according to the report. Learn more in the full Safety blog post.
