E. coli-contaminated lettuce recalled

Consumer Reports News: May 07, 2010 03:21 PM

Just in time for summer salads, there has been a huge recall of lettuce because of an e. coli outbreak that has sickened at least 19 people, 12 of whom were hospitalized. The romaine lettuce was sold in 23 states and the District of Columbia under the Freshway and Imperial Sysco brands.

College students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Ohio State in Columbus and Daemen College in Amherst, NY are among those affected, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The shredded romaine was recalled by Freshway Foods of Sidney, Ohio, which said it came from one of its processing facilities. It was sold to wholesalers, food service outlets, and some in-store salad bars and delis in the following areas: Alabama, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
