If you're packing up and relocating, don't get scammed by a moving company

Consumer Reports News: May 18, 2010 12:09 AM

A little homework can prevent moving hassles.
According to the Council of Better Business Bureaus and the American Moving & Storage Association, among the common complaints about moving companies is that the mover refuses to release household possessions; adds unexpected charges; disappears with belongings; refuses to respond to complaints about lost or damaged items; and never shows up on moving day. Not mentioned here is the hassle in finding a mover in the first place.

If you're going to be moving in the coming months—lots of people move during warm-weather months—avoid becoming victimized by a dishonest, unlicensed company by doing your homework before hiring a mover.

Read "Tips for Avoiding Moving-Day Surprises," on our Money blog, for more details.
