    Inside Consumer Reports Test Labs: Reviewing antivibration pads for washing machines

    Consumer Reports News: May 17, 2010 01:05 PM

    Front-loading washing machines appeal for a number of reasons. But because of their superfast rotation speeds in some cycles (1,200 rpm and higher), many front-loaders are also beset by a vibration problem, an issue that's frequently discussed in our forums. In our ratings of front-loaders (available to subscribers), about 22 percent of the models earned only a fair or poor score for vibration.

    We're currently testing a number of pads designed to deal with the vibration problem. The pads, which you place under each corner of the washer, are supposed to reduce the transfer of vibrations from the appliance to the floor. Prices range from $20 to about $50. Models being tested include:

    • B. Green Innovation Vibe Away Washing Machine Anti-Vibration Pads;
    • CCMD Anti-Vibration Washing Machine Pads;
    • Good Vibrations Anti-Vibration Pads;
    • KE Shake Away Vibration Isolation Pads;
    • Silent Feet Anti-Vibration Pads; and
    • Super Soundproofing Anti-Vibration Isolation Pads.

    We're also testing the Steadywash "vibration isolation platform," $200, which sits under a washer.

    Each set of vibration pads is getting tested on the same front-loading washing machine that scored a fair in our vibration tests. The washer, fitted with the pads, sits on top of a 14x4-foot plywood platform built to replicate a typical residential wood floor. The machine washes a load in the normal setting, and testers measure the vibration level, comparing the result against the machine's performance without the pads.

    In our preliminary tests, only a couple of the models are showing promise at reducing vibration. We'll report on the full test results in the next couple of weeks.
