Test complete: 2010 Lexus GX 460

While testing the Lexus GX 460 for our June 2010 magazine road test comparison of luxury SUVs we found a problem with its emergency handling that caused us to label it a "Don't Buy: Safety Risk." Lexus has since issued a recall to update the stability control software. It's important to note that we put all vehicles we test through this same lift-off-oversteer test, including the other luxury SUVs in the group--Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Land Rover LR4, and Lincoln MKT. We had the recall work performed on our GX, and the changes to the stability control system corrected the problem it made the vehicle a lot more secure and forgiving in our test. We have now published our road test, extended Full Track Test, and also this video.

When we first tested the GX in our emergency handling test, the rear slid out too far before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control. When we put the SUV through our full series of emergency handling tests after the recall work was done, the ESC system intervened earlier and its rear did not slide out in the lift-off oversteer test. Instead, the vehicle understeered--or plowed--when it exceeded its limits of traction, which is a more common result and makes the vehicle more predictable and less likely to roll over.

Overall, the Lexus is quiet and quick but it has some flaws. Handing is ungainly especially as speeds increase and the truck lacks agility, but it's ultimately secure thanks to the changes brought about by the recall. The powertrain is slick and refined and gets decent fuel economy for a large SUV--17 mpg, but it uses premium fuel. Inside, the GX is plush, quiet, and well finished. However, the third-row seat is cramped and hard to access. Off-road and towing capability are both impressive.
