Amazon, reacting to the price cut to the Barnes and Noble Nook announced just this morning, has lowered the price of its flagship Kindle e-book reader to $189, from $259.
The new price means the Kindle now costs $10 less than the Nook 3G, which is now $199 (and was also previously $259). The two devices share a 6-inch screen size and unlimited free 3G access, mostly for ordering books from their respective e-bookstores. B and N also today announced availability of a Wi-fi-only version of the Nook, at $149.
The $70 price cut is the steepest yet of the three reductions Amazon has made to the Kindle's price over the past year. The depth of this cut, and its unveiling just hours after the Nook announcements, speaks to how competitive the two book retailers have become in trying to maintain sales of their readers in the face of upcoming, less expensive competitors and the continuing buzz around Apple's iPad tablet computer, which boasts e-book capabilities.
