    GE recalls 181,000 front-loading washers

Consumer Reports News: June 10, 2010 12:01 PM

After seven reports of fire and smoke damage, GE has recalled 181,000 front-loading washing machines because a faulty wire can break loose causing fire and shock hazards. Complaints reported to the company include instances of flames coming out of the machines as well as minor smoke damage, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall involves front loaders without auxiliary water heating. The model number begins with WBVH5 accompanied by a variety of serial numbers (see the recall notice for the entire list). The numbers can be found on the door frame of the washer as well as on the right side near the bottom.

The washers were sold at department and retail stores from December 2006 until May for $700. Owners of the machines are advised to stop using them, unplug them and to contact GE for a free repair at (888) 345-4124 or by visiting GE's website.

We tested the model in question but did not encounter any problems with the samples in our labs.
