Kelloggs' has recalled 28 million boxes of cereal after consumers were sickened by an off-flavor and smell coming from the package liners of Apple Jacks, Honey Smacks, Fruit Loops, and Corn Pops. The cereals came in boxes of varying sizes with use-by dates between March 26 to June 22. (Check the recall notice for UPC codes and other details.) Only those packaged in the paper-backed foil liner are affected by the off-taste and smell. Cereals packaged in silver plastic film or a clear plastic liner are not affected.
According to Packaging News, Kellogg's first began using the liners in March. Since then the company has been contacted by at least 20 consumers complaining of stale, metallic and soap-like smells and tastes. Five people were said to have reported nausea and vomiting.
