We recently tested 17 dehumidifiers to see which do the best job of drying out basements and other humid parts of your home. Almost half of the units in our ratings of dehumidifiers (available to subscribers) combine solid performance with high efficiency and lower operating costs, making them recommended models. Most of the latest dehumidifiers use R-410A refrigerant, which is also common in new air conditioners.
Our energy-use test compares dehumidifiers across all capacities by measuring the watts needed to remove a pint of water. As a result, models that scored poorly in our energy-efficiency tests still qualify for the Energy Star. In comparing the efficiency of a small-capacity model to that of a large-capacity unit, we found that it cost almost twice as much to remove 25 pints of water with the small dehumidifier than it did with the large one.If you're in the market for a dehumidifier, watch our video here, use our free buyer's guide, and learn how to deal with such underlying problems as a leaky foundation walls or inadequate ventilation at your home. Note that cash for appliances rebates for dehumidifiers are currently available only in only Maine ($25).
