What are the safest containers for microwaving food?

Don't put too much stock in the term "microwave safe." That usually means that the product contains no metal, not that it's able to withstand high heat. In general, containers made from glass or ceramic materials are better choices than plastic containers, but always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

And keep in mind that plastics marked with a No. 3 or No. 7 recycling symbol may contain a chemical called bisphenol A, or BPA, which has been linked to reproductive and other health problems. BPA can leach into food, especially at high temperatures. That's why it's not a good idea to reuse "throwaway" containers like margarine tubs for microwaving leftovers—the plastic might degrade and contaminate the food.
