With close to 40 new laptops in our next batch of Ratings, you'll find computers that run the gamut from low-cost to high-end, from 13-inch travel companions to 17.3-inch desktop replacements, and everything in between. Compaq's Presario CQ62-215DX is just $350, with a 15.6-inch display, 2GB of memory, and a 250GB hard drive. At the other end of the spectrum is Sony's $1,350 VAIO VPCF126FM/B, a 16.4-inch laptop that packs an Intel Core i7 processor, 640GB hard drive, 6GB of memory, and a Blu-ray drive.
Mid-range models include an HP Pavilion 15.6-inch laptop with a dual-core AMD processor, a 500GB hard drive, and 4GB of memory for $700; Dell's $580 Inspiron I14R-1445LPK, a 14-inch laptop; and Toshiba's 3.9-lb. Satellite T235-S1352, a $580 13.3-inch model with an Intel Pentium processor.
Our netbook tests will include a 10.1-inch Dell Mini with a 250GB hard drive for $350. A couple of HP Mini netbooks range in price from $250 to $380, with the more expensive version having a larger 250GB hard drive and pink plaid case. Among the really lightweight models is a 2.4 pound netbook from Asus, the Eee PC 1001PXB-PK301.
We're testing nearly 20 new desktops this month, among them an inexpensive all-in-one computer from Averatec, the All-In-One D1133AF1E-2 ($450). We're also looking at a $300 slim space-saver from eMachines; its processor is Celeron. Another slim model we're testing, the $400 HP Pavilion s5414y, has a dual-core AMD processor and 4GB of memory.
The more powerful desktops in our lineup include the Gateway FX6840-03E. It's got a Core i7 processor, 8GB of memory, 1GB of video memory, and 1TB of storage, for $1,100. We'll be posting the new computer Ratings (available to subscribers) later this month, so check back then.
