Mandatory software update for Garmin Nuvi 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400 series

Consumer Reports News: July 09, 2010 11:08 AM

Garmin has issued a mandatory software update for its Nuvi 1100, 1200, 1300, and 1400 series portable navigation devices (PNDs) to address a potential screen freezing issue. Some units have experienced a software glitch that locks up the navigator at start up with a screen displaying the Garmin logo.

Owners can download a free firmware update using Garmin's WebUpdater program. This update will correct the cause and prevent this lock-up from occurring. However, if your unit has already experienced the screen freezing, it is recommended you return the PND to Garmin for repair. The turnaround time is estimated to be 10-14 days.

While summer may not be the best time to part with your GPS, it is better to get it fixed than experience a problem on a road trip when it could leave you without guidance.
