If it seems like bugs eat you alive, it might be what you're wearing. Scientists don't completely understand why pests might choose you over your best friend, but it is known that all mosquitoes are attracted to our sweat and heat and the carbon dioxide we emit. Some also seem to like fragrances and dark clothing—the tighter the better for biting—because it ramps up the heat you send out, and that's what attracts them (Watch out, skinny jeans enthusiasts!). It also might be that you have a more severe reaction to the bite than other people.
You might be able to prevent some bites by watching what you wear when you venture into the great outdoors, especially at peak feeding hours, which are from dusk to dawn for many mosquitoes.
To prevent tick bites, tuck your pants into your socks, wear boots or closed shoes, and stuff your hair into a hat. Always inspect for ticks after venturing into the woods or grassy areas. They're easier to spot on light-colored clothing.
Bitten? What to do
Don't scratch! That could lead to infection. cool compresses or hydrocortisone cream will reduce irritation. Use tweezers to pull ticks off, head and all. Wipe with antiseptic, and call your doc if you get a rash or fever.
