The new Chrysler is slowly breaking out of its shell. It has been many months since the automaker went through
bankruptcy proceedings, gained government assistance, and an
Italian partner. (For a recap, visi our
auto crisis hub.) Since then, the company has been
shy about future products. It's a shame, as Chrysler needs some positive buzz about the new models in the pipeline. The
Jeep Grand Cherokee is now on sale, and making a strong first impression. There have been
teaser shots of the new Dodge Durango, and now, the updated
2011 Jeep Wrangler makes an appearance. (See more photos in our
New Car Preview.)
The Wrangler upgrades for 2011 are entirely cosmetic, as no mechanical changes have been announced.
For 2011 the Wrangler will look, daresay, a bit more civilized. A revised removable hardtop has larger rear side windows that promise to enhance visibility. Sahara trim models have a body-color top, giving these Jeeps a more upscale look.
There are several new paint colors available, freshening the Jeep palette with Bright White, Cosmos Blue, Deep Cherry Red, Detonator Yellow, and Sahara Tan.
The most notable changes are inside, with a revised instrument panel and center stack. The steering wheel controls now operate the stereo, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and other functions. And the audio system now has a USB input, while the Media Center is compatible with Bluetooth streaming audio.
Jeep claims the use of more sound-deadening material will make the cabin quieter this year.
These changes are certain to add appeal for this off-roading icon, but they do not address all the critical shortcomings that led to the last Wrangler we tested scoring far too low to be recommended. Low points include: Ride, handling, braking, noise, fuel economy, visibility, front-seat comfort, access, and reliability. As with a rocky trail, approach the Wrangler with caution.
Production of the
2011 Jeep Wrangler has begun, with models arriving at dealerships soon.
