It's a sure bet that taking care of your appliances will keep them running longer. Performing a few quick cleaning and maintenance moves can improve the performance of your refrigerator, vacuum cleaner and washing machine, according to Jim Nanni, Consumer Reports' appliance expert. Here's how.

Refrigerators
Vacuuming the dust and debris from the fan and condenser coils of your refrigerator will help it run more efficiently. You should also check your door gaskets periodically—Nanni shows how in the video—to see if they need replacing. If so, follow these step-by-step instructions.

Vacuum cleaners
Broken drive belts are a common problem that can be fixed by most homeowners. Nanni demonstrates this fix by taking apart the head of an upright vacuum. He also recommends changing the bags before they become full to reduce stress on the motor.

Washing machines
A washing machine that shakes during a spin cycle can cause damage by transmitting vibrations through the floor. Nanni levels a washer by adjusting the feet—it's a simple adjustment and can be more effective than the anti-vibration pads and anti-vibration platform we recently tested.
