Maintaining healthy eating habits is beneficial to you and your kids. Although introducing nutritious food to children can be a battle, the increase of childhood obesity should entice parents to help their kids eat right. The correct approach and consistent effort will surely lead to success. (See Add carrots to your child's diet.)
Americans eat approximately 25 pounds of corn per person annually. The sweet taste of corn and its abundance of protein make it an excellent choice for your child's diet. It gets better: Frozen and canned corn have almost the same nutritional value as fresh corn. So, whatever the form, stock up on corn the next time your local store has a sale.
How can you get your picky eater to try corn?
1. Keep it a secret. Young children love to say no, so announcing a new vegetable for them to try isn't always the best approach. Sneak corn into something he already enjoys. For example, adding sweet corn to macaroni and cheese can work wonders. And the camouflage is a bonus.
2. Think like they do. Make food look appealing to your child. Most kids like crunchy food, so try corn as a topping to a homemade English muffin pizza.
3. Make it a family favorite. Children imitate what they see, so it's up to you to model healthy eating habits to encourage them to eat food that's good for them. Why not make corn the family's new favorite side dish? It can be interesting to see younger kids try it just because Daddy or an older sibling did.
Making changes to our diets may be difficult at first, but healthy alterations are always good ones. What vegetables do your picky eaters refuse to eat?
