Our bargain picks can help balance rising food costs

Consumer Reports News: August 12, 2010 01:09 PM

If you read today's Wall Street Journal over breakfast this morning, the article " Food Makers Chew Over Prices" probably caught your eye—and your appetite. It warns that double-digit price hikes for commodities like coffee, wheat, and powdered milk could mean higher costs for you at the supermarket. "Overall I don't see margins for the big food guys significantly declining," Warren Ackerman, director of equity research at Evolution Securities, told the newspaper. "They are not going to just take it on the chin."

But that doesn't mean you have to—not if you offset rising food and drink prices by choosing the best bargains from our latest reviews. Take coffee: In our taste tests of 19 brands of Colombian, Eight O'Clock came out on top, yet it costs far less than many competitors. Over in the bread aisle, Milton's 100 percent whole-wheat bread had the highest nutritional value and one of the lowest costs of nine rated breakfast breads

Come dessert time, Archer Farms Belgian Chocolate ice cream (from Target) was judged dense and creamy, with strong, high-quality flavors by our expert tasters, and at 33 cents per serving, it's one third the cost of pricier scoops from Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry's.
